My story …
I love a good story! Especially the type that gives me a glimpse into common experiences that shape us all. I'm inspired by slices of life that expose overlooked truths. By stories of struggle that dare to be honest. And by stories that allow me to look at my life and challenges with new eyes.
My own story stems from relationships with others and myself. My history spans an early childhood in Minnesota followed by years spent moving from one small town to another in the central United States.(I used to joke that my family's second car was a U-Haul van!) Today my story finds me in Des Moines, Iowa where I've lived for 20 years, the last 13 of which I've spent with my long-suffering husband, Frank. From this point on, my tale is a mystery. It's not always spell-binding, but I love turning the pages!
My passion …
Although I love stories, I'm fanatical about communication in all its forms, verbal and visual. For me there's nothing as exciting as connecting people with ideas ... and I enjoy the challenge of making information available, understandable and memorable! That's why I've launched Enroute 365 … and why I make my living as an independent communications consultant and freelance writer.
My profession …
As an independent communications consultant I work independently and with other contractors in designing and building Web sites, blogs and hybrid sites (learn more here). I also take on the periodic communications project from local companies and not-for-profits. My portfolio even includes design and layout for newsletters, direct mail and book covers.
Then there's the flip side of my career, writing and editing. As a freelance writer I provide research and writing services for clients in most media, including blogs (find details here). When I'm not writing slice-of-life pieces (like the posts found here), I'm working on rewriting technical content for consumer audiences, writing brief news bits or tackling magazine submissions.
To sum it all up, here are some highlights from my life in communications:
- English B.A., Truman State University
- Cross-media experience in radio, print, multimedia, Web and emerging media
- Expertise in marketing communications for small business
- Specialization in communications writing and design
- A practice focusing on techniques for engaging attention and enhancing message retention
